Things to know about the program:

  • We meet at Kerr Elementary School in Room #127.  If you come to class during school hours, you will need to ring buzzer to get in, sign in/out, and take a visitor badge (adult only).  If you come after hours you do not need to sign in, just turn left walk all the way around to the back of the building following the hallway and you will find us.

  • Your interaction is important, please refrain from using your cell phone during the session. We understand that situations arise where you need to contact someone/ be contacted.

  • Each Investigation is 6 weeks in length.  Occasionally, classes need to be cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.

  •  If for some reason you are not able to attend, please send an email to let me know.  clp@fcasd.edu

  • Children will be exposed to academic information during their work on problem solving but numerals and letters will not be explicitly taught.

  • Younger/older siblings should not attend the session.  While you are engaged in activities with your child, you might find it difficult to monitor other siblings.  There are also materials in the room that are not safe for younger children.

  • This is a program where your child is learning to be curious and problem solve.  They will be challenged to think about questions for which they will not have answers.  Allow them to wonder, let them construct  knowledge by making their own attempts at problem solving.  It is through this exploration that they will learn how the world works.

  • It is expected that the first attempt may not always work.  Continuing to work  on solving a problem will teach perseverance rather than frustration.

  • Most importantly, this program is meant to be enjoyable for both you and your child.  Do not worry if your child doesn’t want to engage in the activity.  There are times when he or she may just want to sit back and observe or quietly read a book with you.

  • We take the first 15 minutes of class to engage in free exploration of the materials on the right side of the room (as you enter).  You are welcome to read a book from the bookshelf if that is your preference.  The side to the left of the white shelves will be set up for our class exploration and I ask that you refrain from using those materials.  Please engage in this open explore time with your child.  It is fine to socialize with the other adults, but this is really a time for you to enjoy exploring with your child.  At the conclusion of the open explore time I also ask that you help your child to put away the materials they were exploring so that my other classes may enjoy the same experience.

  • After the free explore, we have a circle time where we play a game, read a story, and discuss what the day’s activities will be.  There are typically several activities to choose from and you can engage in all, some, or none of them.  The most important thing is to enjoy this time with your child and if that means reading a story or exploring the materials in the free play area, that’s okay.  Typically, the reluctant children will begin to engage in the structured activities once he or she becomes comfortable with the classroom.

  • At the conclusion of the class, we gather for one final story.  I then hand out a book for your home library that you can enjoy with your child.

  • We also, have backpacks that you can borrow for the week and then return the next week.  You can check out the backpack on the computer and then check it back in on the computer when you return it.  Each backpack has one or two books and an activity.  There is also an inventory sheet in each backpack.  I ask that you check the contents before you return it so that the next family can also enjoy it.  If there are missing pieces, or something needs to be fixed, please let me know so that I can replace/repair the contents.  Be warned that some backpacks have LOTS of pieces.  You may not be interested in keeping track of all of those pieces and there are backpacks with fewer pieces available.  I am also adding games to the collections this year.  These backpacks require guardian participation unlike some of the other packs that can be explored independently.
